Note | !Blessed on June 25, 1912, by Elder William G. Bickley, Beaver East Ward, Book A, no. 492. !Birth Certificate No.: 62-a, vol. 1 Beaver City, Beaver County, Utah. ! Baptized by Leanord Paice, 22 Jul 1923, Beaver, Beaver, Utah. ! Ordained an Elder by Elder Wesley W. Farrer. Thurland Dale Sly grew up in Manderfield Utah. He was the oldest child in his family and worked to supplement the family income. He skipped the 4th grade and jumped to the fifth, still earning high marks. In High School he left school again to work, and help support his brothers and sisters. He never received a High school Diploma, although he excelled in his studies. Thurland was a very kind and soft towards his family and farm animals, but he had a shy, unpolished, rough social manner. He courted his home town sweet heart, Alma Edwards, through letters while working out of town in a mine for many months at a time. (These letters are in possession of Russ Sly) Thurland also worked as a lumber jack. He was married to Alma Edwards and later moved to Sulferdale, Utah where he worked as a miner and later as a foreman at the Sulferdale mine (now closed). Thurland and Alma had two children who both died as infants before Russell Melvin Sly was born. Later he started with the Union Pacific Rail Road and moved to Milford. In Milford Thurland bought a farm with his friend Burt Merryweather, and later bought some government land in the Beaver Mountains where he and Bert each built cabins (used for camping and hunting season) where he lived until his retirement 33 years later. After retirement, Thurland and Alma sold their home, farm and cabin and moved to Enumclaw, Washington to be with their only son and his family. He bought a house with three acres and raised some cattle and kept his two horses there. Thurland smoked cigarettes most of his life and nearly died in 197? from an operation to remove an ?????? ???????. He recovered from this operation after many months and in 1979 went back to work as a farmer, helping his son cutting hay, while he was out of work as an airline pilot. He liked to spend time in his shop working on farm equipment, welding and repairing old broken machinery. He had a very large garden and always gave away plenty of food. Thurland attended church through out his life and was always involved in service projects. Some times he would be the only one to continue work on them until they were done. Thurland spent much of his life caring for Alma, his wife. She had a weak heart and had several open heart surgeries. In 1981 she spent a couple of months in the hospital with open heart surgery and complications. Thurland traveled to hospital nearly every day until she died. Thurland's brother Joe came up from California and took him on a trip for a week after the funeral. Thurland was very down and sad at the loss of his wife and this trip seemed to help. He continued to live on the farm caring for the animals for two months. Then on May ??, 1981 on his way to the house from a mornings feeding of the livestock, he lied down and died. ! Thurland blessed by William G. Bickley; bapt by Leonard Paice; confirmed by Thomas W. Gunn 22 July 1923; Deacon: 18 Nov 1924 by Joseph Patterson; Teacher 1 April 1928 by Wesley W. Farrer; Elder 25 Aug 1935 by Wesley W. Farrer.; Secretary 2 quorm of Elders Milford 1st ward 1949. |
